Key Issues

Leadership

The Mayor is considered first among equals. They have the same vote as all members of council. They are your choice for who is the ambassador of your community both locally and regionally as well as the person tasked with leading a group of people they do not choose and also cannot change. On the first point, I feel like I am a true representation of our community. I grew up here and raised my family here. I am well aware of the wants and needs of the families in our city and also our valuable senior population. I am a business owner, a volunteer, and an avid supporter of many local not for profits and shopping local. I’m an active member of the community, attending all sorts of events. I love attending local sports games, festivals and parades, fundraisers, and just getting out on the trails, skating opportunities, and the ice slide is amazing. I feel like your Mayor should be someone who is active in the community and is a positive presence at events. I love this community and am proud to help shape its future and I know I can be a great ambassador for the council and this city. On leading. The Mayor needs to be someone who can inspire a respectful and positive council work environment. They need to have the patience and understanding to work through challenges and bring the group together. I consider myself to be a very patient and respectful person. Probably the two significant contributions to my leadership style was my time in sea cadets and my early learning education. I learned everything I needed to about communication and how to be a positive leader. I believe these valuable learning opportunities were complimented by my board experience and work experience. I am truly up for this challenge and I’m excited to put my mark on that position. Team Fort Sask is a very special group and I value the time I have been part of it.

Regional Collaboration.

Recently the provincial government made a decision to cut funding to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Association. This association has been the source of a large volume of regional collaboration from transit, to transportation infrastructure, regional growth plans, and more. The dissolving of this group is a huge loss for our region and the effects could potentially be quite negative. I believe there is an opportunity for regional collaboration even when it is not mandated. Communities coming together not because we have to, but because we can make better decisions for all when we do. I don’t know what that would or could look like however I do believe there is opportunity in front of this region and I believe I would be a good fit to be a part of figuring out what that could look like. We are better and stronger together.

Fiscal Responsibility.

Fort Saskatchewan has a strong financial position. Years of good financial management, reserve development, fiscal restraint, and balancing the wants and needs of the community have had a significantly good impact on our books. This has meant a long period of fairly stable tax increases. We have significant capital investments happening over the next 10 years. The aquatics facility, 2nd fire hall, expansion of Veterans Way, as well as the continuation of important neighbourhood rehab work. With significant industrial development in Fort Saskatchewan over the next 10 years it is easy to get excited about the increased tax assessment coming in; however I firmly believe in ensuring we are not committing to anything before that assessment comes to fruition. I will continue to make decisions I feel reflect a balance between getting new projects started, maintaining our infrastructure, and ensuring the affordability of living in Fort Saskatchewan continues.
