Growing Up in Fort Saskatchewan

I have deep roots in Fort Saskatchewan and feel very connected to this community and the area. My grandfather grew up in the area on a farm with his large family. I always take a moment to think of him when I grab ice cream at the train station as this is where he boarded the train to go off to the Navy.

I moved to Fort Saskatchewan from Gibbons when I was 7 in 1990. I remember being so excited to move here because I loved the water tower, always watching for the exact moment I could see it when we drove in for a grocery trip or to use the new pool.

I lived with my parents and 4 brothers. Don’t feel too sorry for me, I was the only one with my own room and new clothes. Growing up I participated in the local judo club and the sea cadet corps. Sea cadets was one of the highlights of my youth. Creating independence, leadership skills, and building relationships that have made me who I am today.

My first job was at McDonald’s where I met and started dating my husband.

I graduated from JPII High School in 2000. I Married my highschool sweetheart Lee in 2004 and started our own family in Fort Saskatchewan, having Trista in 2005 and Cohen in 2007.

Volunteerism

Sea Cadet Instructor- From 2000-2006 I was an instructor with the local sea cadet corp. It was an absolute privilege to instruct youth on instructional technique, leadership, sailing, and being a positive role model.

Chamber of Commerce- After opening our first business in 2009 I immediately reached out to the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce to see how I could help. I started on the Business Awards Committee, was elected to the board of directors, chaired the Policy and Advocacy Committee, held many roles on the board of directors including Chamber President from 2016-2017

Heartland Community Hospice Foundation- I was a part of the founding board as Vice President, followed by several years serving as President. Our dedicated group was successful in advocating for hospice beds to be located in Fort Saskatchewan and their current home is in Rivercrest Care Center.

Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital Foundation- Continuing with my interest in healthcare in our community I joined the hospital foundation board in early 2024. I sit on several committees for this board including the events committee where I am blessed to work with the “dream team” in putting together successful fundraising events.

Professional

After highschool I worked in a support department for Dentons Law Firm ( Fraser Milner Casgrain at the time) where my experience surely helped prepare me for being an elected official. Having 90 lawyers to answer to is not so different then the general public ;)

Scratching our itch to work for ourselves I helped my husband open a heating company in 2009.

After having my children, I gained a passion for early learning and studied Early Learning and Child Care at Grant MacEwan. Running a successful dayhome for 5 years we made the leap to opening a preschool in 2011. Since then we have expanded to several childcare programs in Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park which we still manage today.

Who Is Lisa Makin?

Outside of work and council I would say I’m just a pretty easy going person. I love to get out for walks and do yoga. I love reading, camping, hiking, and travelling absolutely anywhere. I wouldn’t call myself a green thumb but I seem to have the ability to grow random enormous vegetables. I am a terrible golfer. The last time I skied I got a concussion…. I haven’t given up on it yet though I’d love to take lessons and try again.  I’m an ok cook but I try. I love to scare my family by jumping out of places they don’t expect me, this has backfired on me before but is always fun. I am either very good at cards or very lucky although my Grandpa would tell you I am a cheater… not true. I intentionally get up early because I love to drink my coffee in the quiet and watch the sunrise. I’m a sucker for animals and if the bylaw would let me I’d probably have 10 dogs right now because how can you say no to those faces? Also, a diehard Oilers fan. I think that’s my nutshell.
